- Measuring Cup (this is a great basic starter set)
- Small Mixing Bowl (these are my favorite because they don’t slip, have a handle and a pour spout)
- Baking Dish (anything you like will work. These are very versatile and can be used for lots of things).

Description
Nothing like getting the kids to try some healthy apples by baking them into a warm, bubbly, crumbly, sweet dessert and serving it with cold vanilla ice cream! This recipe is fun, easy and gives kids lots of opportunities to work with the beautiful APPLE!
Ingredients
- 4 medium APPLES peeled & sliced or diced
- 3/4 cup packed BROWN SUGAR (kids love doing the packing!)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose WHITE FLOUR (use whole wheat to healthy it up but it will slightly change the texture.)
- 1/2 cup quick-cooking or OLD-FASHIONED OATS
- 1/2 cup BUTTER, softened (just leave out on the counter for 30 minutes, do not melt)
- 1 teaspoon CINNAMON
- 1/2 teaspoon NUTMEG (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray medium size baking dish with cooking spray or go old-school and slather with butter or shortening.
- Peel apples, the slice or dice and place in dish. I like to dice because my kids will eat bite-sized pieces of new things better than big pieces.
- Mix all the rest of the ingredients and sprinkle on top.
- Bake 30 minutes until golden brown
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Enjoy!
Notes
- Green apples hold up good. I used Fuji apples from my tree and they did great. Galas or other softer apples will do fine but just give you a little mushier dish, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!
- I used a round white ceramic baking dish but you can use anything that is about the size of an 8 x 8 inch square pan.
- Nutmeg has a beautiful complex flavor but if your kids are choosey with flavors (like mine), just leave it out. If you want to go for it, try getting a nugget and grating it, smells soooo good, really different than the bottled kind, but any will do in a pinch!
